On May 24th… On this day in 1968, in recognition of his distinguished public service and outstanding contributions to the United States and to the world, United States President Lyndon Johnson presents a Congressional Gold Medal to Lillian Disney, widow of the late, Walt Disney. The Congressional Gold Medal is an award bestowed by the United States Congress and is, along with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award in the United States. It is awarded to persons who have performed an achievement that has an impact on American history and culture that is likely to be recognized as a major achievement in the recipient’s field long after the achievement. Walt Disney had previously been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Johnson back in 1964.
